Seed Potatoes

I'm so looking forward to the Whitchurch Potato Day on 28th and 29th January. However, due to my impatience I went to Charlton Park Garden Center which organises it, as it is close to where I work. They didn't have the number of varieties that they have at the Potato Day but they still had quite a few to choose from. I couldn't help myself and ended up buying 4 bags of seed potatoes. They were Winston, Blue Belle and Bonnie.

I also ordered some NVS Sherine and NVS Amour from JBA seed potatoes. These are special show varieties which JBA have sponsored and brought back to make available.

I couldn't wait once I got home and as soon as the kitchen was cleared from the dinner things, I took it over and begun to prepare the potatoes.

Each potato was washed under a running tap to remove all dirt and any disease which may be present. They are then dried in paper towel and stood on more paper towel to dry off some more. Once they were dry, I then stood them in a tray ready to chit. I then put them in the potting shed, in plenty of light, to ensure they don't get too carried away. I will now keep an eye on the weather and if there is any danger of frost, I will cover with fleece.

  1. Looks good although to be honest and being totally new to all this I had to look up what 'chitting' was - google is of course your best friend.

Due to space I will be attempting to grow potatoes in bags so hopefully it will work out.

Looking forward to reading more and picking up some useful tips over the year!
