Arghhh Frost

The frost we had recently has hit me very hard

I lost all of my NVS Sherine potatoes and many more others. All my exhibition onions are dead and many of my 250gram onions also

Still, JBA have come to my rescue and after liaising with them today, they have managed to get some more out to me asap. Now you can't beat that for service and I doubt if you would get it anywhere else

Not all is bad however, my Toughball onions seem to be toughening out. Although have checked back, they are still alive which is much better than my disaster last season
Toughball

Also, after trying Celery out for the first time last season and doing reasonably well, I though I'd try to bring my own on from scratch and give it a better try. I sowed them in a propagator and they were up in just 8 days.

I have also re-potted up some into 2" pots

Still too cold for anything else yet and waiting for it to warm up significantly before continuing

  1. Hi darren. i am sorry to hear you have lost your onions through frost but i cannot understand why you were not prepared for it well in advance. Any how i hope you will be able to get some more going for the the shows.

    1. Thanks Geoff, I had them covered with fleece and even had a paraffin heater on. If I grew them more serious, I may invest in a heater and large electric bill

  2. Sorry to hear you lost some of your seed tatties mate. I just got mine on Thursday last week so just got them starting to chit. I kept back some sherine from last year along with blue belle. Your Toughball look like they are going to be alright. I've finally got a few Globo that I hope to get going for the 250 gm class.

  3. What a bummer! Anything else you need?

I've bitten the bullet and kept just a little heat on in the greenhouse and don't appear to have lost anything. You can often pick up really cheap soil warming cables on Ebay which I've found invaluable.

  4. Rich, there is no such thing as a little heat. Even if you have it on the lowest setting, once the temp has gone below the setting, the heater comes on and the full 1kw or 2kw of heat is being pumped out. It will only turn off once the temp has been reached. It takes up as much power to heat between -1 and 0 deg c than 10 - 11 deg c. You are still heating the same amount and the heater switches off when it reached temp and comes back on when it goes below the setting. Therefore, you are still heating up the same area by the same amount.
    Sorry, trained electrician :)

  5. Bloody professionals! LOL!

I understand what you're saying. I wasn't really thinking about the amount of heat, just how often it was applied. Throughout the really cold spell I had it on 24/7 for a few days resulting in the air temperature dropping to -0.7 deg on the very coldest night where the outside temp went to -8 deg close to the greenhouse. The addition of soil warming cables has certainly helped in that I don't appear to have lost anything, including some heat loving small citrus plants. Other than that, I just have a layer of bubble wrap as insulation and good protection from winds from the North.
